NMBI Board Election 2017
 

Notice is hereby given that an election for four nurses and one midwife to be members of Board of Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), is to be held in accordance with the Nurses and Midwives Act, 2011 and The Ministerial Procedures, dated 2 August 2012.

The five persons to be elected are in the following categories:

  1. A nurse from the practice of psychiatric nursing
  2. A nurse from the practice of intellectual disability nursing engaged in clinical practice
  3. A nurse from the practice of public health nursing engaged in clinical practice
  4. A midwife from the practice of midwifery
  5. A nurse from the area of nursing engaged in the care of older persons


Nominations will be accepted in the offices of the NMBI from 9.00am on Friday 23 June 2017. The closing date and time for receipt of nominations by the Returning Officer in the offices of the NMBI is Monday, 3 July 2017 between 10.00am and 1.00pm.

If a poll is to be taken, election and e-Voting information will be issued on or before the 31 August 2017 to every nurse and midwife registered with the NMBI as of 21 August 2017 at 1.00pm. The electronic ballot will commence on Wednesday, 20 September 2017 at 9.00 am. The ballot will close on Thursday, 28 September at noon.

NMBI launches new online phased payments facility for nursing and midwifery registration
 

Nurses and midwives across Ireland can, for the first time, pay their annual registration fee on a phased basis online, it has been announced.

Using their online account on the web portal, registrants practising in Ireland will now be able to pay their Annual Retention Fee (ARF) in instalments, giving them greater flexibility and better scope to plan financially to fit their personal circumstances. The new phased payment facility will be open to all registrants and is part of NMBI’s commitment to improve the registration process and make it as simple and efficient as possible, while still ensuring patient safety is at its core.

 

 

To make phased payments to NMBI, registrants need to access their accounts under the My Account section on the NMBI website and follow the short instructions to action a payment, which can now be an instalment as low as €20. This phased payment option is uniquely available via the web portal and will not be possible by Direct Debit, cash or cheque.

Registrants as always must continue to ensure their full ARF is paid by December 31 to maintain an up-to-date registration that allows them to practise in the following year. Nurses and midwives will continue to receive a reminder notice regarding their ARF every November, but one which will now reference any payments already made in part or in full. Under the phased payment process, registrants will continue to be subject to the same removal conditions - as outlined in the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011 – in the event of them failing to pay their full ARF by January 1.
Nursing and Midwifery Values in Practice Conference
 
The Values Initiative led by the Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health in partnership with the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) HSE, and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland recently hosted its 2nd annual conference.  

The conference entitled Nursing and Midwifery Values in Practice was held in Dublin Castle and over 350 nurses and midwives from across the country attended. Minister Harris addressed the conference and acknowledged the central and critical role of nurses and midwives in our health services, stating  ‘We are very fortunate to have the most compassionate, caring and committed nurses and midwives working for us, who have the best interests of our patients at the heart of everything that they do’.

The conference was live streamed on the day and is available for viewing on the ONMSD website.
Advanced practice: nursing and midwifery

The next Registration Committee meeting will take place on 5 September 2017. Please note the following submission dates:

  • Job descriptions  must be submitted to the Advanced Practice Section of NMBI on or before Friday, 28 July 2017.
  • Portfolios must be submitted to the Advanced Practice Section of NMBI by Friday, 11 August 2017.


Transcripts for the masters and relevant specialist post registration programme(s) must be submitted directly to Advanced Practice Section of the NMBI by the higher education institution.

Reflective Practice Education Day for Preceptors hosted at Mayo University Hospital
 
Mr John Murray, Vice President of NMBI and Ms Ruth Hoban, Professional Officer with NMBI opened the day with the Values for Nurses and Midwives which took place in Castlebar on Friday, 2 June 2017. 

The theme of the day was reflective practice, focusing particularly on the benefits of reflection in care delivery in ever changing and challenging health care environments.  Preceptors were provided with an opportunity to  reflect on the core values for nurses and midwives (Care, Compassion and Commitment) and were advised to constantly question and reflect on their clinical practices to avoid the ‘normalisation of deviance' from evidence based practice.


Dr Louise McBride, Head of the Nursing Department in Letterkenny Institute of Technology, described findings from her PhD research which illustrated that facilitated structured reflective practice had positive effects on learning for internship nursing students. In capturing the benefits of reflective practice, Mr Richard Holmes presented his masters research which found that nurses and midwives engaged in reflective practices through their own processes of reflection. Dr Maura Fitzsimons outlined that nursing students tended to choose convenient topics to reflect upon in order to achieve the grade, however students felt safe to reflect with Clinical Placement Co-Ordinators on clinical practice issues. Intern nursing student, Bridget Ryan discussed her experiences of preceptorship and reflection. The similarities between mindfulness and reflection were discussed by Dr Ann Caulfield who described the benefits of mindfulness and reflection in caring for oneself and others in  busy health care environments.  

The Reflective Practice Education Day for Preceptors, funded by the NMPDU Galway and Mayo University Hospital, highlighted the benefits of reflective practice for undergradute nursing and midwifery students and the need for structured reflection for registered nurses and midwives in practice.
European Medicines Agency relocation bid - your support
 
The Department of Health is actively campaigning for Dublin to be the new host of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the wake of the UK's decision to leave the EU.

All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA) annual master class
 

The All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA) is the voice of gerontological nursing in Ireland. Its aim is to promote healthy ageing and wellbeing of older adults through the advancement of excellence in nursing. The wellbeing of older adults is at the heart of its person-centred agenda.

AIGNA recently held its 9th annual conference in Waterford: “Social Connectedness and Positive Ageing”. The annual master class, “Person Centred Care under the Assisted Decision Making Capacity Legislation”, will be held on 19 October 2017 in the Radisson Hotel, Athlone. The annual fee for AIGNA membership is €30. Additional options are available which include a twice yearly journal ‘JAIGNA’, conference, master class and access to the website.
