NMBI President presented Rosaleen McElvaney with a Certificate of Appreciation, for her service to the NMBI Board. Rosaleen has served on the NMBI Board since December 2015 as a Board member nominated to represent the education and training of nurses and midwives. She was thanked by the NMBI Board at her final board meeting on the 23 May 2018, for her excellent contributions and emphasis on patient safety in education.

Call for expressions of interest: Fitness to Practise Committee

NMBI is seeking expressions of interest from midwives to participate in the work of the Fitness to Practise Committee (FTPC).

 

Midwife candidates must be registered as a midwife with NMBI.

 

The FTPC is a statutory committee of the Board of NMBI, established under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011. The FTPC considers complaints referred to it by the Preliminary Proceedings Committee for further investigation.


NMBI is seeking expressions of interest from midwives to participate in the work of the Fitness to Practise Committee (FTPC).

Midwife candidates must be registered as a midwife with NMBI.

 

The FTPC is a statutory committee of the Board of NMBI, established under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011. The FTPC considers complaints referred to it by the Preliminary Proceedings Committee for further investigation.

Candidates must possess a range of skills and competencies amongst the following:

 

Skills and competencies

 

Essential

  • Ability to make informed decisions, think objectively and critically and articulate opinions in a clear, concise and logical manner
  • Display a proven track record of effective judgement, decision making, initiative and analytical thought
  • Demonstrate experience in identifying solutions to complex issues and understanding their impact and implications
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and teambuilding skills with proven ability to build relationships with many different stakeholders
  • Ability to interact with other committee members in a group setting, valuing the contributions of all members
  • Display excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to negotiate and challenge when necessary
  • Possess a strong sense of ethics, integrity and probity

 

Desirable

  • Prior experience developing, reviewing and analysing policies
  • Prior experience providing professional advice, support and guidance to the professions of nursing and midwifery or to other health care professionals
  • Display significant knowledge of the business and regulatory environment in which NMBI operates or demonstrate capacity to acquire this knowledge.
  • Experience of the public health sector
  • Experience working on public boards

Remuneration
Committee member expenses will be paid in accordance with public service travel and subsistence policy only.

 

Term of appointment
The appointment to the FTPC will be for a period of three years. Re-appointment may be made at the end of the first period for a further period of three years. No member of the FTPC shall serve more than two terms of office on the FTPC. There should be no expectation of automatic re-appointment to a committee of the Board. Successful applicants must not be employees or former employees of NMBI.

Advanced Practice (Midwifery) Standards and Requirements published

NMBI is pleased to publish the Advanced Practice (Midwifery) Standards and Requirements, during this anniversary year of 100 years of Midwifery Regulation in Ireland.

 

NMBI recognises the level of knowledge, skill and expertise required of a Registered Advanced Midwife Practitioner (RAMP) to provide care for mothers, babies and their families in all settings during a very special time.

 

The Standards and Requirements provide flexibility to Higher Educational Institutions and Healthcare Providers to be responsible and adaptable in the provision of of evidenced based education programmes that will prepare midwives with the required competencies to register as Advanced Midwife Practitioners.

The conference will take place on Thursday 22nd November 2018 in Thomas Prior Hall, Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.


Abstracts are invited for this conference from midwives in practice, education and academia under the following categories: antenatal care, intrapartum care, midwifery care in complex pregnancies, postnatal care, breast feeding, public health and family planning.

 

Confirmed keynote speakers:

Dr Sally Pairman, CEO of International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and
Professor Cecily Begley, Chair of Midwifery, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin.


Submission guidelines and abstract template are attached: abstracts should be submitted as a Word document. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words.


Abstract submission deadline: Monday 2nd July 2018 (11pm GMT)

National Student Midwife Debate 2018 in University of Limerick

The National Student Midwife Debate 2018 took place on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018 in the University of Limerick.

 

Leigh Gath, Disability Advocate and Confidential Recipient for Health Service Executive gave the keynote speech.

 

The motion for debate was: "This House Believes that 100 years of Midwifery Regulation in Ireland has Enhanced the Safety and Quality of Midwifery Care”. 

 

The winning team of Megan Smith from University College Dublin, Deborah Hadley from University of Limerick and Lane Galvin from Dundalk Institute of Technology debated in favour of the motion. They were challenged by Francesca Beahan from Trinity College Dublin, Ashria Mohamed from University College Cork and Chloe Ferriter from NUI Galway who debated against the motion. Margaret Quigley, Director of Midwifery University Maternity Hospital, Limerick chaired and moderated the debate.
