Gay & Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN)

A new resource has been produced by GLEN in consultation with the Mental Health Commission entitled Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Service Users: Guidance for Staff Working in Mental Health Services. 


This new guide aims to assist all mental health staff in their day to day interactions with LGBT people availing of their service by:
  • explaining LGBT mental health issues
  • identifying what mental health staff can do to support LGBT service users
  • provide a list of further resources to support staff and service users

1. Helping Smokers to Quit - Brief Intervention Smoking Cessation Training –
    National Training Programme


This is a one day training programme for clinical staff in support of the HSE National Tobacco Control Framework, to develop skills to support patients who choose to stop smoking.  Health professionals and nurses in particular are ideally placed to raise the issue of smoking with clients. 


The training provides participants with an understanding of the complexity of smoking and examples of simple language to intervene whilst maintaining a positive working relationship with the smoker.


The course is facilitated by Health Promotion and Smoking Cessation specialists in every HSE region and is 6 hours (1 day) in duration. The course is free of charge.


This course is recognised for Category 1 Approval 6 CEUs for registered Nurses and Midwives and 5.5 External CPD credits for registered doctors / consultants by the ICGP and The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
