To mark 100 years of Midwifery Regulation in Ireland, NMBI are hosting a national conference to celebrate the regulation and development of the midwifery profession.

The conference will be held in Thomas Prior Hall, Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 on Thursday 22 November 2018.

The President of the NMBI, Essene Cassidy will open the conference and chair the first panel. The keynote for this session will be Breedagh Hughes, RCM Northern Ireland Regional Officer (retired). Topics will include a history of midwifery regulation, what constitutes good regulation, a lawyer’s view and resilience and professional wellbeing.

This will be followed by a panel session on the development of the profession of midwifery, which will cover the politics of midwifery regulation, women’s views regarding mental health in the perinatal period, interventions to support breastfeeding and ask if neonatal units are providing culturally sensitive care to infants.

A keynote by Dr Sally Pairman, CEO of the International Conference of Midwives will precede the main panel discussion of the day entitled: ‘Driving forward the midwives role’. It will be chaired by Kathy Sheridan of the Irish Times.

The final session will be chaired by Dr Denise Lawlor, Chair of the NMBI Midwives Committee and will include student reflections on midwifery. The keynote ‘The next 100 years of midwifery in Ireland’ will be given by Professor Cecily Begley.

The Minister for Health, Mr Simon Harris will close the conference.
