Nurses encouraged to return to practice by NMBI and Nursing Homes Ireland

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), in conjunction with Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI), has written to 13,774 nurses who are categorised as ‘inactive’ on the NMBI’s register encouraging them to return to the workforce to provide nursing care to the elderly. A bursary to the value of €1,500 will be available to these nurses if they wish to complete a HSE-run return to nursing practice course. Read more.

As part of my committment to openness and transparency, we will dedicate a section of our website to provide information and updates on meetings of the Board of NMBI.
We are a 23 person Board with representatives from the professions of nursing and midwifery and members representing the public interest. We have six scheduled Board meetings a year, held over two days, every two months. During these meetings we consider general Board business and fitness to practise matters. Read more.
NMBI symposium for registered nurses and students in intellectual disability
NMBI held a major symposium for registered nurses and students in intellectual disability on 27 September 2016 in Dublin.
The impressive line-up of speakers included Professor Mary McCarron from Trinity College Dublin, Professor Ruth Northway of the University of South Wales and Professor Michael Brown of Edinburgh Napier University. Read more.
NMBI symposium: Prof Mary McCarron presents groundbreaking IDS-TILDA study
At NMBI's recent RNID symposium Professor Mary McCarron, Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies in Trinity College Dublin, gave a presentation on IDS-TILDA, a longitudinal study researching ageing in Ireland among people with an intellectual disability aged 40 and over. This study is the first of its kind in Europe, and the only study able to directly compare the ageing of people with intellectual disability with the general ageing population. Find out more.
Deadline for submission of advanced practice portfolios
NMBI continues to accredit advanced practice services and register nurses and midwives as RANPs and RAMPs.
The next scheduled registration meeting will take place on 1 December 2016. Job descriptions continue to be submitted to NMBI by Directors of Nursing Midwifery Planning Development Units (NMPD) for the HSE. The last date for receipt of job descriptions for consideration at the next meeting is 9 November 2016. The last date for receipt of portfolios to go forward for registration as RANP or RAMP is 16 November 2016. Find out more.
Values for Nursing and Midwifery Initiative
As part of the Values for Nurses and Midwives Initiative, NMBI in collaboration with the Department of Health and Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), have developed a national awareness programme, which will be facilitated at a venue near you in the coming weeks/months. The aim of the 2-hour programme is to enable nurses, midwives and nursing and midwifery students, to familiarise themselves with, and reflect on, using the agreed core values of Compassion, Care and Commitment to inform their decision-making. Health Products Regulatory Authority launches first public information campaign
The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has unveiled a national public information campaign to raise awareness of the safe and effective use of medicines. The HPRA initiative advises the public that, to get the most benefit from their medicine, they should take the time to always read the information printed on the packaging and/or the product leaflet. Entitled ‘For the full benefit, take three minutes’, this first ever campaign undertaken by the HPRA was launched by Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, and will run for six weeks from 19 September 2016 across national and regional radio, digital and print media. Meningitis awareness for students
Students aged 16-24 are the second most at risk group of contracting meningitis and septicaemia. As a result the Meningitis Research Foundation aims to provide information for students to help them to recognise these deadly diseases should they occur.

Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord while septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease. Meningitis and septicaemia can kill within hours so early diagnosis and prompt, effective treatment provide the best chance for a good recovery.
Student accommodation and social behaviour increases the risk of meningitis as the bacteria is spread by close contact such as kissing, coughing, sharing cigarettes or drinking glasses. Research has shown that approximately 1 in 4 young adults carry the bacteria at the back of their nose and throat, compared to just 1 in 10 of the general population, contributing to their overall increased risk.
While most students will have had the vaccine which protects against Meningococcal Group C meningitis and septicaemia (MenC), there are other types of meningitis and septicaemia which are not yet vaccine preventable. Therefore it is vital that students remain aware of the symptoms.
The attached student poster and symptom cards can be printed and used to help promote awareness among the student body. Meningitis and septicaemia share the symptoms of many other every day illnesses such as the flu or even a hangover and that is why it is so important that students are aware of the symptoms and know when to seek help.

HSE quality care metrics research study
Improving the quality of nursing and midwifery care is a key priority. To support nurses and midwives to measure, monitor and improve care, the HSE Office of Nursing and Midwifery Services have commenced an exciting programme of research to identify the specific and relevant quality care metrics for acute hospital care, midwifery, children's, community and public health nursing, mental health and intellectual disability nursing.

The study is co-ordinated through the Nursing & Midwifery Planning and Development Units and is academically supported by three three universities - University College Dublin, University of Limerick and the Natiional University of Ireland Galway. The participation of nuurses and midwives in the research is vital to its success. In the oncoming weeks you will be requested to advise the researrchers on what you feel are the important aspects of our care delivery that contributes to a quality and safe care experience for patients, clients, famiilies and carers. The research team will be aiming to encourage nurses and midwives of all grades across all fields and disciplines to engage in the online survey.
