International Day of the Midwife
|
Since 1992, 5th May has been internationally recognised as the day for highlighting the work of midwives. It is marked around the world with celebration for the role and work midwives do to improve the health outcome and mothers' experiences in childbirth.
The International Confederation of Midwives theme for this year's Day of the Midwife is ‘Midwives, mothers and families: partners for fife’. Midwives everywhere understand that by working in partnership with women and their families they can support them to make better decisions about what they need for a safe and fulfilling birth.
This year NMBI will hold its annual student debate in Dundalk Institute of Technology on 4th May. Six students (one from each higher education institute providing education leading to a midwifery qualification) will debate the motion ‘Third stage of labour: should it be women’s choice or institutionally determined?' Moderating the debate will be the journalist Sarah Carey. For more details, or if you would like to attend, email education@nmbi.ie.
