  • Nurses and Midwives (Recognition of Qualifications and Registration) Rules, 2017.
  • Nurses and Midwives (Registration in the Candidate Register) Rules 2017.

Advanced practice nursing standards and requirements
 
Advanced practice nursing is defined as a career pathway for registered nurses, committed to continuing professional development and clinical supervision, to practice at a higher level of capability as independent, autonomous, and expert practitioners.  

NMBI have approved Advanced Practice Nursing Standards and Requirements, which include six domains of competence specifying the standards that describe advanced nurse practitioner practice.

Values for Nurses and Midwives – ONMSD announce bursary award
 
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Department of Health, The Director of the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services (ONMSD) HSE and the President of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) will be hosting a conference to showcase Nursing and Midwifery Values in Practice on May 16th 2017.  

The ONMSD have announced the Nursing and Midwifery Values in Ireland: Bursary Award (up to €5,000 monetary value) which will be presented at the conference. The bursary is intended to recognise nurses/midwives who demonstrate a commitment to promoting the core values that underpin their practice.  Applications are invited from all nurses and midwives for this first Nursing and Midwifery Values in Ireland: Bursary Award and for Poster Presentations related to this theme.  For further details email NMValues.Initiative@hse.ie or visit the webpage.

Removal and Restoration to the Register 2017
 
The Board of NMBI, at their meeting on 21 March 2017 decided to remove the names of 2,258 nurses and midwives for non-payment of their Annual Retention Fee (ARF). 

Once removed from the Register it is an offence to practice nursing/midwifery. Find out more including how to restore your name to the Register.

NMBI Vice President John Murray awarded Honorary Fellowship of the RCSI

Mary Jacob, Dean of Faculty, John Murray, Niall Breslin, Thomas Kearns, Executive Director of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery and Emily Logan
NMBI Board member and Vice President, John Murray, has been made an Honorary Fellow of the RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to society, nursing and midwifery. 

The award was made on1 March at the opening ceremony of the 36th Annual International Nursing and Midwifery Research and Education Conference. It is the highest honour conferred by the Faculty. Honorary Fellowships of the Faculty were also awarded to Emily Logan, Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and former ombudsman for children, and Niall Breslin in recognition of his contribution to mental health advocacy. Invitation to a consultation on draft policies
 
Department of Health
The Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health, has commenced a process to consult on the following draft policies:
  1. Development of a Community Nursing and Midwifery Response to an Integrated Model of Care,
  2. Development of Graduate, Specialist and Advanced Nursing and Midwifery Practice.
Minister for Health Simon Harris TD launched the draft policy documents on 27 March 2017 at the Council Chamber, Primary Care Centre, Ballymun. Find out more including where and when the regional consultations are being held.

The Board of NMBI has made a decision as to findings and sanction arising from one complaint received under the Nurses Act, 1985. The findings were made against Mr Shane Patrick Noone (PIN: 52100).
