The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), today launched new practice standards for midwives that will ensure safe and  high-quality midwifery care for mothers and their babies in Ireland. 

The new Practice Standards for Midwives 2015  replace the 2010 standards and will facilitate the skill set development of midwives in Ireland and ensure competencies are based on best-evidence and service need.  The new standards are effective from 31 May 2015.

They were developed following a report last year by Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, called ‘HSE Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise Perinatal deaths (2006 - date)’, and a call in the aftermath of this report by the then Minister for Health, James Reilly TD, for the regulator to explore how to improve competency and the development of skills in midwifery.
